Dog Walking On a Dark Night

The evenings are getting shorter and daylight is fading fast. As the dark evenings approach we must make changes to our daily routines.

One thing that is important to remember is the safety of you and your dog when dog walking in the evening or at night.

Guide To Walking Your Dog At Night

Be Safe Be Seen

The number one rule when dog walking is to be safe and be seen. This is true for both you and your pooch.

At Petworld, we have several options to ensure your dog is kept safe whilst dog walking:

  • Reflective Leads
  • Reflective Collars
  • Flashing Collar Clip
  • Hi-Vis Coat

  • Reflective collars and leads are perfect for most pets. They are easy to fit and use.

For pets that need additional illumination, you can try a flashing collar or a hi-vis coat.

    Dog Walking Tips:

Dog walking can be a lot of fun. It is a great way to bond and it is hugely beneficial for the health and well-being of both pet and owner.

But before you hit the road with your furry friend there are several things to bear in mind.

    1. When dogs walk at night be extra vigilant and always use a leash. As well behaved as your pet may be, low light and unfamiliar surroundings may startle your dog. A harness can make your dog's walking experience a lot easier and safer. We recommend the K9 Julius Dog Harness.  Our full range of dog harnesses includes brands such as Doodlebone, Hemm&Boo, and Hugo & Hudson.
    2. Keep your pooch warm. Some dogs feel the cooler temperatures more than others. If this is the case for your dog you should consider buying a well-fitted, fleece-lined doggy jacket.
    3. Stick to well-lit areas. Anytime you are walking at night or in the dark it is important to stick to well-lit areas. This allows you to see where you are going, avoid obstacles and be visible to oncoming traffic.
    4. Always carry a flashlight with you to illuminate anywhere with very low light.
    5. If possible, avoid traffic. If avoiding traffic is not an option then we recommend walking towards the traffic. As traffic approaches raise your flashlight to ensure that you are seen, taking care not to blind the oncoming driver!

    How To Lead Train

Before you start a dog walking your dog must be lead trained and ready for the roads. Although it takes time and patience, lead training is very important and will make life easier in the long run.
