Having the right cat litter for your kitty is important. Every cat needs a litter box, even if your cat is indoor/outdoor, in case they get trapped in the house or you are not available to let them out when they need to go.
As all cat lovers know, cats can be very fussy at times and their litter preference is no exception. Litter box aversion or inappropriate urination are frequent problems with cats and therefore you want to do everything you can to choose the right cat litter product.
To find the perfect choice for your pet you may have to try a few different ones before finding what works for your cat. Luckily cat litter comes in a great variety of materials, here are a few of our favourites.
Guide To Cat Litter
Clay Cat Litter
Traditional clay cat litter is generally the least expensive of the litters. It must be cleaned and changed often as it will not form easily scoopable clumps. The entire litter box must be changed at least once a week.
It is heavy, absorbs urine well, and does a fairly good job at controlling odours. Some brands are scented to mask odours or have additives like charcoal which help control odours. Clay litter can be dusty, so if allergies are a problem, consider the low-dust varieties. One downside to Clay is that it can stick to little wet paws which can result in dusty paw marks near the tray!
Clumping Cat Litter
Clumping cat litters are quickly becoming the most common litter used. They are generally still a clay base but unlike standard clay litters they “clump” when soiled, so you can remove the used bits without dumping the entire box.
Each box should be scooped twice daily. They can also be dusty, and if allergies are a problem, consider the low-dust varieties. The choice of scented vs. unscented is a personal one. Scented cat litter often masks smells and can be pleasant on the nose. Note: Clumping cat litters are Not recommended to use with kittens incase they ingest it.

Silica Cat Litter
Silica Gel litters have grown hugely in popularity over the past few years , this is mainly due to its economical properties . You tend to have very little waste with gel litters as the urine gets trapped into the gel with no spreading of the mess!
This can also be a better choice for owners and cats with allergies as dust tends to be to a minimum due to the gel composition. You will tend to pay a little more for gel litters but there is a great economical benefit as it lasts longer. Another one we notice from our customers, some gel crystals can be slightly rougher on your cats paws and some cats don’t like this.
Tofu Cat Litter
Tofu cat litter is made of 100% biodegradable ingredients like bean or soy pulp making it safe if accidentally ingested by your cat. It can be flushed down the toilet or used in your garden as fertiliser. It is naturally clumping for ease of cleaning and it quickly soaks up liquids and neutralises odour. As a dust free litter it is perfect for cats prone to allergies.
Wood Cat Litters
Wood pellet litter is a natural cat litter made up from recycled wood making it a great eco-friendly option for your cat. Wood litter is a Non Clumping form of litter which Naturally expands when wet and turns to dust which then settles to the bottom of the tray leaving any dry pellets at the top so there is no need to fill the litter pan all the way. Wood pellets naturally prevent odour as they lock in the moisture.
With so many options it can be hard to know which is best, the ideal cat litter is one that they like the most!
If you don't know your cat's preference, you can try having two pans and two different types of litter and watch your cat see which one they prefer. When you find one your cat likes, stick with it!
