Bringing Home a New Puppy

When bringing home a new puppy, start by creating an area in your house just for the puppy. This may be in the kitchen, utility room, or any warm spot. Your new dog will come to feel safe and familiar here.

  • You will need to clean your home. Remove anything that the puppy could chew or swallow, including ornaments and wires. Only keep things on the floor that you don’t mind being eaten, chewed, or soiled!
  • Puppies both love and have, to chew. While their teeth are growing, they need to relieve pressure on their gums by gnawing.
  • To avoid damage to furniture invest in a few interesting toys. Have a mix of hard (tough rubber or plastic), medium (soft rubber or animal hide), and soft (cuddly toys) to keep him interested.

  • Buy a collar and leash correctly sized for your puppy. You should be able to easily fit two fingers under the collar this will mean it will not choke the pup but he won’t be able to wriggle out of it either! Before going out, make sure the puppy has his vaccinations.
  • If walking at night, invest in reflective collars, leads, or a high-visibility jacket for your dog. If he gets off his leash, he will be easy to spot.
  • For grooming, you must buy a puppy shampoo. Adult dog shampoos can irritate the skin. You will also need both a hard brush for removing dirt and detangling knots and a soft brush for use around the face and legs.
  • A flea and tick brush is a good idea, just in case! The Mikki Puppy Grooming Kit is ideal.

  • For sleeping, dogs need a comfy bed and bedding. A crate is often suitable for a puppy, especially if you have to leave him alone during the day. They are also very handy for traveling.
  • Make sure you buy high-quality food, filled with vitamins, minerals, and pure protein. Also have two dog bowls, one for food and one for clean water.
  • Last but not least, a new puppy can be very nervous. They will need a lot of care and affection. You will have a lot of fun getting to know their personality!
